This week, we’ll all be sitting around the dinner table, admiring a golden, roasted turkey, and sharing with our friends and family what we are thankful for this year. At Simply Smiles, we will be giving thanks for our dental health and for all the smiles we have the privilege of serving year after year. Dental health is more than just teeth and gums – it’s about the health of your whole body. Good oral health is truly a blessing to be grateful for.
Our teeth serve us in so many ways, from chewing, to talking, to flashing a friendly smile. Many people count their good health as something to be grateful for, but without healthy teeth, that wouldn’t be possible. Your dental health can have one of the most significant relationships with your other bodily systems, either for good or for bad. Whether we are talking about their health or their many functions, our teeth truly are some of the most interesting and unique features about us as humans.
Here are some reasons to be thankful for your pearly whites:
- They help us communicate and express ourselves.
- Communication is an essential part of relationships, and while there are many ways to communicate, speaking and singing are a few ways we can express ourselves to the world. It would be much more difficult to vocalize and form words without teeth. That’s great food for thought as you spend time communicating with loved ones this Thanksgiving.
- Teeth allow us to smile, and boost our confidence.
- Smiles don’t know borders. They help us communicate with people all over the world, without saying a single word! Smiles build self-esteem and boost our confidence. Did you know that children are thought to smile around 400 times a day?
- They work hard to allow us to eat delicious food.
- This Thanksgiving, as you’re enjoying your stuffing and green bean casserole, we hope you’ll be mindful of the huge role your teeth play in you eating your delicious meal. It’s been determined that the average chewing rate is ten times per mouthful, and if you are enjoying three full meals a day, this comes to about 30,000 chews every day!
- Teeth are sturdy.
- Enamel and dentin form the top two layers of your teeth, and they are both stronger than your bones! Tooth enamel is strong enough to withstand an average of 200 pounds of pressure. Your teeth really have you covered!
- They are low maintenance.
- For as much as our teeth do for us, they don’t require much upkeep to maintain their health. Out of the 24 hours a day, they only require about 5-10 minutes for brushing and flossing, and your dental appointments only take a few hours out of your year. Not a bad trade-off!
- Teeth are unique.
- Your teeth are like your fingerprint; they are unique to only you!
- They contribute to your overall wellbeing and health.
- The health of your teeth can be directly related to the health of your heart and other bodily systems. Oral health is more than about just your mouth. Studies have shown that people who practice proper oral hygiene are less likely to suffer from diabetes, strokes, heart disease, and even cancer.
At Simply Smiles, we have a lot to be thankful for. We are thankful for all of our patients who trust us with their health, and for all the lives we get to touch every day. Every smile is a gift to us, and we hope you’ll come visit soon, so we can show you just how amazing your teeth really are. Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours!
